Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program
The Department of Urology offers a Society of Urologic Oncology accredited two-year fellowship in urologic oncology. Our goal is to prepare aspiring urologic oncologists for a career characterized by leadership and innovation in urologic oncology, while providing a multidisciplinary and disease-based focus and understanding of urologic oncology.
The urologic oncology fellow participates directly in all complex urologic oncology surgeries at UC San Diego Health hospitals, multidisciplinary care of patients with genitourinary malignancies, and research.
About the Fellowship
Year One
The emphasis of the first year of the program is dedicated to research. We have a particular interest in clinical trials, translational research, and outcomes research. The fellow has an opportunity to take clinical trial design and research methods coursework through the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute at UC San Diego. This coursework can lead to a certificate in Clinical Research Enhancement through Supplemental Training (CREST) or a Masters of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research (MAS). The Urologic Oncology Fellow is also appointed as a Clinical Instructor with expectation to develop and run an autonomous practice with admission and operative privileges, teaching responsibilities, and administrative support.
Year Two
The second year of the program is dedicated to clinical experience (protected research and administrative time is also provided). The fellow is primarily at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, UC San Diego Medical Center – Hillcrest, and San Diego VA Medical Center. The fellow operates with the core urologic oncology faculty, including Drs. Derweesh, Kader, and Kane. This comprehensive operative experience covers the breadth of urologic oncology, and includes experience in open, robot-assisted, and conventional and single-port laparoscopy. There is an emphasis on development of independent operative capability with a disease focus on core urologic malignancies (kidney, bladder, prostatic, testicular, and penile neoplasms), adrenal disease, and retroperitoneal sarcoma, while continuing the responsibilities of the Clinical Instructor appointment.
