Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program
The Department of Urology offers a Society of Urologic Oncology accredited two-year fellowship in urologic oncology. Our goal is to prepare aspiring urologic oncologists for a career characterized by leadership and innovation in urologic oncology, while providing a multidisciplinary and disease-based focus and understanding of urologic oncology.
The urologic oncology fellow participates directly in all complex urologic oncology surgeries at UC San Diego (UCSD) Health hospitals, multidisciplinary care of patients with genitourinary malignancies, and research.
About the Fellowship
Year One
The first year of the program is primarily dedicated to research, with tracks in clinical trials, translational research, and health services, equity, and outcomes research. Fellows may also take coursework in clinical trial design and research methods through the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute at UCSD, which can lead to a certificate in Clinical Research Enhancement through Supplemental Training (CREST) or a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Clinical Research. In addition, the Urologic Oncology Fellow is appointed as a Clinical Instructor, with the expectation of developing and running an autonomous practice that includes admission and operative privileges, teaching responsibilities, and administrative support.
Research tracks:
- Translational Science
- Immuno-oncology
- Microbiome
- Biomarkers
- Clinical Trials
- Health Services, Equity, and Outcomes Research
- Health Services Research
- Implementation Science & Quality Improvement
- Health Policy, Economics & Cost-Effectiveness
- Health Equity & Access
- Patient-Centered Outcomes
- Survivorship
Year Two
The second year is devoted to clinical experience, with protected research and administrative time. The fellow is based primarily at UCSD Jacobs Medical Center and UCSD Medical Center – Hillcrest, operating with the urologic oncology faculty. The operative experience spans the breadth of urologic oncology, including complex open and robotic procedures. The curriculum emphasizes progressive operative autonomy with a disease focus on core urologic malignancies (kidney, bladder, prostate, testis, and penile), adrenal disease, and advanced retroperitoneal and pelvic oncologic surgery, while the fellow maintains Clinical Instructor responsibilities.
