Pediatric Urology Fellowship

In collaboration with Rady Childrens Hospital-San Diego, the Pediatric Urology Fellowship Program at UC San Diego offers a two-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship program in pediatric urology.

About the Fellowship

The fellowship consists of 2 years that expose the fellow to all aspects of clinical pediatric urology and research. The fellow will work closely with residents from UCSD and the Navy during both years. The majority of clinical time is spent at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego (RCHSD) during the first and second years. The Division of Urology at RCHSD has been ranked among the best in the nation for 7 consecutive years by US News & World Report.

Year One

The first year is an intense clinical experience that exposes the fellow to the entire spectrum of operative and inpatient pediatric urology. The fellow will participate in the spinal defects multidisciplinary clinic two half days per month and will be allotted one full research day per week to begin clinical research projects. During clinical time, the fellow is responsible for the urology service and overseeing resident activities. The first-year fellow is also in charge of directing weekly conferences.

In the second half of the first year, the fellow will begin the CREST (Clinical Research Enhancement through Supplemental Training) program, geared toward developing the skills that clinicians will need to excel in clinical research. The curriculum includes courses in epidemiology, patient oriented research, biostatistics, outcomes research data management and grant writing. Protected time is provided to attend CREST courses. The first-year fellow will also participate in the Inquiry program, which focuses on quality improvement at the hospital level.

Year Two

The goal of the second year is to provide clinical practice experience, under supervision, but with a great deal of independence. The fellow will have their own designated clinic. They will have operative cases, generated from clinic, and will participate in resident teaching during this clinical time.

The second-year fellow will be assigned protected research days as well. The fellow is expected to produce at least two manuscripts during the second year. The CREST program will be continued and completed, which aids in research project development and completion. The second-year fellow will also be responsible for completion of a quality improvement project to completing the Inquiry program and fulfilling the ACGME requirement.
