Clinical Preparation

The Operating Room

Students will be exposed to the everyday realities of live surgery, surgical lifestyle, and culture. There are 3 (three) locations where you can gain this experience. Always confirm where you will meet your mentor.

Proper OR Etiquette

Attire

  • Check the “board,” i.e., the large TV screens outside the locker rooms. The board will display which OR the attending is operating in and the procedures they’re doing that day.
  • For your first day in the OR, there should be someone in the room across from the men's locker room who can help you if you have any questions about where to go.
  • You will need scrubs, and someone in that room will be able to assist you, providing you with a pair and processing your badge so that you can get scrubs for yourself and return dirty scrubs. You can also just use the one pair they give you, washing them yourself, to avoid any difficulties with processing your badge.
  • While in the operating room, the expectation for summer research students is to just to watch and learn. You should not expect attendings or residents to ask you questions, but if you are asked, feel free to answer to the best of your ability, but there’s no expectation for you to know the answers. This should be an opportunity to get exposed to the different fields of urology and learn more! There should be no pressure when you’re shadowing in the OR or clinic.
  • You may feel ‘in the way’ in the OR, and that’s okay! As students, we all do.
  •

  • Wear your surgical scrubs given by the hospital or wear your street clothes to the hospital, then change once at the hospital.
  • The OR tends to get cold; you can wear a light jacket in the OR if you would like.
  • Pack a lunch.

Clinic

Students will also be exposed to urology clinic that includes interacting with patients as they are seen during office visits. Because clinics can take place in multiple locations, always confirm the address with your mentor.
