 Getting Started Minimize

On this page, you will find information to help you locate funding sources, plan research projects, and complete and submit grant applications at UCSD.

A UCSD researcher's grant application usually takes the following path to the granting agency:

You and your grant preparer

>

Dept. of Surgery, Cancer Center, or VMRF

>

Dean's Office and other UCSD entities

>

UCSD Office of Contracts and Grants

>

Granting agency

When you decide to submit a grant application, please contact the Urology Editorial Offfice staff as soon as possible.  They will initiate the necessary UCSD requests, determine the UCSD internal deadline for your application, and assist you in organizing and routing the application for internal approvals before submission.

Also, ask the Editorial Office staff for two quick-reference checklists to help you organize your application: "Mapping Out a Grant Application" and "Finding UCSD Information for Your Proposals."  These checklists will help you identify:

  • The information you need to gather or provide
  • The items you need to request from other individuals
  • The UCSD officers who need to see and/or approve your application before it can go to the agency.

Please also see this online guide to locating information and resources for your project:

 Upcoming Grant Application Deadlines Minimize

If you plan to apply for a grant, please note that you will need to meet the UCSD internal deadlines for submitting your application.

The internal deadline depends on where the work will be performed (UCSD, Cancer Center, or VA) and whether the proposed project is small or large: major applications need more time.  See "Getting Started" above for more information.

Get a Glimpse of an NIH Grant Peer Review Session

Researchers can now view an online video of a mock study section meeting offered by the NIH Office of Extramural Research.

NIH produced the video to demonstrate how grant applications are evaluated.  The video shows real reviewers and NIH personnel discussing actual applications that had been disguised to protect privacy and proprietary information.
